Why is it Mädchen das and not der or die?
Just because they’re small doesn’t mean you can overlook this rule! Words with a diminutive form, like ‘-chen’ and ‘-lein’, are always neuter. This also applies to newborns, both human and other, like das Baby, das Lamm, or das Ferkel.
